Primarily inspired by the long, fitted and buttoned garment worn by men in the 'Romance of Alexander' dated 1338-1345. (Bodleian Library, MS. Bodl. 264).  Similar garments appear in ‘Roman de la Rose’ and countless manuscripts all over Europe c.1330-1360.

This is a transitional garment bridging the earlier shapeless tunic and the more fitted garments which developed later. The dropped waistline, slim fit and long, attentuated lines mark this as quintessentially Gothic.  Unlined, with rows of closely spaced round buttons closing the front and sleeves.  Slightly wide jewel neckline.

This garment is Made to Order in your choice of fabrics (wool or linen) and your choice of colours. ORDERING NOTES:

  • Please note that like a suit or uniform, we offer this garment in "Regular" and "Long". Gentlemen over 6', as well as those who normally take a "Long" suit or uniform should order the long version of their size.
  • Please order carefully, this garment is custom made for you and as such is not returnable.
  • So many garments of the period have been painstakingly depicted in particolour, stripes and/or patterned cloth that it seems to be a hallmark of the period.  Keeping true to the spirit of the times, we have patterned fabrics such as plaids, checks and stripes available to choose from, along with solid coloured fabrics. Find our online wool swatch album here: WOOL SWATCHES.  Please enquire if you'd like a patterned fabric and we'll let you know what we have available.

Scott is wearing a purple/black herringbone wool, Kyle an olive/gold/rust windowpane check (we regret that these fabrics are no longer available.) Pouches, shoes and hood are BSD, all other accessories for styling only. For more photos and historical references for this garment, please see the product album on Facebook: 'Alexander' cotehardie
