A hat is more than a mere accessory, it is the crowning glory of a fashionable man's outfit. Our hat is based on images of stylish hats on of the mid-late 15th century. Common throughout England, France and the Low Countries, the works of Loyset Liédet (Flemish, active about 1448 - 1478) are particularly rich sources of images of this type of hat.

Examples:
The Book of Renaud de Montauban (Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, 5073)
Date: c.1470

The History of Olivier of Castille, Bibliothèque nationale, fr. 12574
Date: 1455
(Instructing David Aubert)

Book of the deeds of Alexander the Great, translation by Vasco da Lucena, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, MS. f.22547
Date: c. 1468-79
Folio 1 (Suprise visit to the author)

The crown of the hat is 5.5" tall and has a short stand up brim which curves around the crown and forms a peak or bill in the front. Hand formed of 100% wool, each one is unique. Some have longer and pointier brims, while others are wider and more shovel shaped. Hats are photographed and listed individually, you are purchasing the actual hat in the photo.

Available in size 7-1/4 (24")  which will fit most mid range heads. The hat can be stretched slightly to fit larger heads and a strip of fuzzy wool can be glued inside to adjust the size for smaller heads.

The hat comes to you softly blocked. It will hold its shape but can be sprayed with shellac to make a stiffer hat, if desired.

100% wool blocked hat in various colours. Hat only, with no feathers or other ornamentation.

(Please note that the product photo is an example only. See the listing below to view hats for sale)
