Black Swan Designs researched and began offering this arming doublet 12 years ago and there are now several hundred in use around the world. Used in a host of disciplines, all users report excellent to outstanding results. Feedback has been so uniformly positive that we are confident in saying that this is the finest garment of its kind on the market.

As suggested by the Hastings Manuscript, our arming doublet is "strongeli boude" (strongly built) of stout fabrics, reinforced in key stress points and lined in linen. The pattern is derived from the illumination of a man being armed which accompanies the text in the Hastings Manuscript, the donor portrait of Don Inigo de Mendoza by Jorge Ingles, c1450 in which he wears an arming doublet, which mirrors civilian styles of the period.

One of the key features of the design is the armhole and sleeve head, which moves the seam toward the center of the body, freeing the shoulder and isolating the motion of the arm from the body. The sleeve tapers close to the arm as it descends, providing a trim fit under the arm harness. The corset back of our design tailors the garment to the wearer, compensating for weight loss or gain. It  works so well that it has been widely copied and become a standard feature in garments produced by many other makers.

This style of closely fitted, unpadded doublet provides a solid foundation under historical plate harnesses c.1375-1550.
