In late medieval Europe, garments were joined or fastened with short lengths of braided string or leather thongs called 'points'.  These 'points' had metal caps called 'chapes' at each end. The chapes made the points easy to thread thru eyelets which were worked in garments. 'Dressing points' were indispensable and used to fasten hose, doublets, braies, pourpoints, etc.

A complete point complete with braided cord and copper alloy chape can be found in the collection of the Museum of London.  Extant examples of the chapes abound, and dozens if not hundreds of examples of hollow cones made of sheet metal can be found in Museum of London's collection, the Portable Antiquities Scheme (finds.org.uk), as well in the collection of virtually every museum in Europe.

This kit makes multi coloured points.  Although most images from the period depict solid coloured points, a significant number show multi colours.  It may be more the limitations of the art medium than practice that points to a preponderance of solid laces. Multi coloured laces provide an inexpensive way to personalize and dress up an outfit, much like a belt ot or new hat.

Each kit contains all the materials and instructions necessary to make 12 hand braided, multi colour, double ended points up to 22" long.

  • Braiding instructions for 3 loop finger braid
  • Assembly instructions
  • 36 pieces of pre cut string
  • 24 copper alloy chapes
  • 1 tube Super glue*

*The use of Super glue to hold the chapes onto the laces is recommended but not required.  Chapes may be fastened with some other form of glue (not included), or stitched on.
