Jousting Shield Blank, Tilting "Ecranche", circa 1440-90

A popular design seen during the very late 14th century and even up until the mid 16th century, this shield shape offered jousters protection and a target to aim at, usually seen in the joust A' Plaisance, or "Joust of Peace", with blunted, or "coronel" tipped lances.

Usually fitted with a neck strap and a somewhat loose strap around the wearer's forearm, an additional strap should be fitted to encircle the left upper cannon (bicep armour) to maintain proper positioning. When ordered with straps, we provide all three of the above.

This laminated wood shield should be covered in canvas adhered with glue for strength. Gesso can seal the fabric covering, providing a good surface upon which the colors of the user can be emblazoned.

Approximately 15" high.

• "Simple" shape is 15" wide, and has a "bouche" for clearance of the lance when couched.
• "Scalloped edge" shape is 13-1/2" wide and has a non-functional, decorative "bouche", as seen in shields from the late 15th century.

5/8" thick, fully hand-laminated and hand cut of 5 layers of 1/8" plywood.
