Gown, V-Neck Overgown, 15th century

This simple, elegant gown reflects the trend for less full gowns fashionable after about 1450. Wide, deep "V" neckline is edged with plush black velvet. The bodice fits smoothly over the bust and belts under bustline. Slim Gothic "Y" shape is achieved by confining the skirt fullness in the center front and back so the gown sides hang nearly vertical. Fitted sleeves are carefully shaped to allow a full range of motion without binding, and end in a deep cuff lined with the same plush black velvet as the neckline. This style of gown is worn by Maria Portinari in the "Portinari Triptych" by Hugo van der Goes (1476-79). This style may also be seen in "The Book of the Tournament" by Rene' of Anjou (1460), the plate "Water tilting" in the Hours of the Duchess of Bourgogne (MS76/1362. about 1450, Musee' Conde') as well as countless portraits and illuminations from the second half of the 15th C.

Available in high quality wool or fancy brocade with black velvet collar and cuffs. (Simple black band shown in photo is included, but we recommend sourcing a proper belt for long term use.)
