Rosary with Tau, 1500

In ancient times, tau symbolized life or resurrection. The Cross of Tau has been used as a charm of protection against the plague since the 6th century. It is also the symbol of St. Anthony, who is called on in cases of ergot poisoning or "St. Anthony's fire". Although more prevalent in northern Europe where rye was more common, the number of examples found in England demostrate how widely the charm was used.

Custom made for us by Fettered Cock Pewter in Canada, our charm is based on similar examples found in the Museum of London, Metropolitan Museum of Art,  Portable Antiquities Scheme and auction houses. The tau is also represented in  period sculpture (Weeper from the tomb of Isabella of Bourbon) and paintings (Portrait of a man with a carnation).

This rosary copies one in the Deutsches Historisches Museum [Object #AK 2002/1], which was made in Austria and is dated 1501-1550. We have copied not only the number and arrangement of the beads but also used fluted melon beads to mimic the original. Sent nicely packaged with information card and organza storage bag.
