Berkemeyer, Conical bowl, Pale green

The distinctive shape of the Berkemeyer drinking glass  originated in Germany and the Netherlands in the 15th century and remains popular today. The wide, flared bowl sits atop a thick, hollow stem covered with prunts, similar to the römer. The characteristic green or yellow colour is caused by iron impurities in the sand used for glass production.

Berkemeyers were originally carved from birch tree branches and were provided with lids. The prunts on the stems of glasses reminded drinkers of the rough bark of the wooden beakers, hence the association. Frequently depicted in late medieval art and copied in pottery, the Berkemeyer shape remained popular and was frequently depicted in still lifes of table settings by the Dutch masters in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Budget priced and less delicate than some of our other glassware, this glass is sturdy enough for everyday use and will travel safely to reenactments and events in your basket.
