Charm, Pewter, Tau with hanger

In ancient times, tau symbolized life or resurrection. The Cross of Tau has been used as a charm of protection against the plague since the 6th century. It is also the symbol of St. Anthony, who is called on in cases of ergot poisoning or "St. Anthony's fire". Although more prevalent in northern Europe where rye (the source of ergot fungus) was more common, the number of examples found in England demostrate how widely the charm was used.

Custom made for us by Fettered Cock Pewter in Canada, our charm is based on similar examples found in the Museum of London, Metropolitan Museum of Art,  Portable Antiquities Scheme and auction houses. The tau is also represented in  period sculpture (Weeper from the tomb of Isabella of Bourbon) and paintings (Portrait of a man with a carnation).

The tau charm is suspended from your choice of annular brooch or pin back Canterbury Cross. Both styles have a filigree bell suspended from the bottom loop of the Tau.  Brooches and charms are approx 1.5" tall x 1.5" wide. The 3 pieces assembled are approx 4" long. Charm and brooches have been individually hand cast in lead free pewter.

This is a beautiful piece of period jewelry which makes a wonderful gift. It comes nicely packaged on a presentation card with organza storage bag.
