Badge, Pilgrim, St. Thomas Becket, 14th century

Becket’s martyrdom in 1170 at the hands of King Henry II’s knights established Canterbury’s position as the principal English pilgrim shrine. It was to maintain this position until the mid 15th century, when it was overtaken in popularity by Walsingham and Windsor.
