Glassware

Sturdy glass, hand blown in period styles. Best for applications where durability and a historical impression is more important than absolute accuracy.  These glasses are perfect for toting to events with minimal fear of breakage.

Glass has been continuously present in the territory of the Czech Republic since the 2nd millennium B.C., thanks to abundant stocks of  the wood and quartz which are the raw materials required for glass production. The lords and masters of  this Lusatian Mountain territory found glass making a suitable way to exploit the otherwise deserted area, and the first written accounts date to the beginning of the 12th century A.D. The oldest known and documented glassworks in the Czech lands [then known as ‘Bohemia’] date back to the end of the 13th century, and by the second half of the 14th century, glass was quite common in both noble palaces and more humble households. By the end of the 16th C, Bohemian glass overthrew the long rule of Venice once and for all and took over the position of the most significant world-wide exporter of glass with permanent trade agents in all important centres of Europe, Asia and America.

Because of the large and prolific area of production, it is impossible to identify a particular glasshouse where pieces were produced.

In one small town, more than a hundred glasshouses were situated a mile or less from the network of medieval roads that connected the region with larger urban markets. Glassware would be carefully wrapped in straw to protect it and then placed in hand baskets to be transported by cart or on foot across the mountains to Burgundy, France, the Netherlands and England.

Each piece is hand blown and finished by skilled glass artisans. Due to the handcrafted nature of these items, dimensions & capacity are approximate and will vary slightly from piece to piece.
