Complete underwear package contains all the undergarments necessary for a correct 14th or 15th C. impression. Smock, braies, stockings and headwear are made of high quality linen, expertly cut and professionally sewn for a polished look and long life. All garments are based on extant garments and/or period artwork and have no visible machine stitching.
Smock is based on 14th and 15th century illustrations of women in their underclothing, one of which is the illustrated volume of the "Decameron" c. 1430 - 1440 owned by Philip the Good of Burgundy. The cut echoes that of the "Bocksten" tunic (1350) and other mid-late 14th century garments. Long tubular sleeves with underarm gusset, and large gored skirt to make a kirtle hang correctly.
"Ladies' braies" are split waist to waist through the crotch. The opening falls together while standing providing full coverage, and the mid-thigh length leg prevents chafing. The split crotch design allows the wearer to use the privy while wearing the braies, eliminating the need to lower and raise undergarments under bulky period gown skirts. Based on a pair of 16th C. Italian bloomers in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Stockings are made of bias cut fabric and are sized to fit a woman's leg and foot. Cut based on the London finds described in the Museum of London's "Textiles and Clothing - Medieval Finds from Excavations in London" book.
The Turban Coif seems to have been especially popular in the Italian States and Holy Roman Empire (Germany). Clear instructions for wrapping are included- once wrapped, the hair is kept clean and neat with no additional fussing or adjusting.
The Winged Coif is often seen in paintings of 15th C. French and Flemish country women, this style seems to have been especially popular in the Lowland counties and Burgundy. Distinctive "wings" frame the face, and when the front edge is worn folded forward, the coif affords wonderful sun protection!
