Hat, Acorn, 15th C, Black fuzzy

Worn by St. Eligius in Petrus Christus’ “St. Eligius in his workshop”, and by subjects in works by Dierick Bouts (“Martyrdom of St. Erasmus”, “Justice of Emperor Otto III”) and many others. It is seen being worn by everyone from soldiers to courtiers, and could be the single most popular and universal style seen in 15th C. artwork. Courtiers are seen wearing this style of hat under their chaperones in King René’s “Book of the Tournament”.

This hat is made in a wonderfully thick wool with a fantastic fuzzy texture that is quite different than the smooth wool we usually use. In many 15th C. images the artist has gone to some pains to depict a rough texture in the fabric of the hat. As soon as we saw this fabric we immediately thought it looked like what the artist may have been depicting. Although we bought all we could, this is a limited quantity fabric that cannot be replaced when we run out.

Sizes:

Although there is some variation due to the handmade nature of this hat, forehead circumference measures approximately-

  • Medium - 23"
  • Large - 24"
  • X-Large - 25"

Wool lined in linen, hand finished. No visible exterior machine stitching.
