Cuisses with demi-greave, c1390, Spring Steel

A late transitional Italian style, these cuisses and poleyns (thighs & knees) with demi-greaves are fully tailored and shaped to hug the leg.

We've based these on inventory #53 in the Armoury of the Castle Churburg, Sluderns, Italy. They originally belonged to the von Trapp family of northern Italy.

The thigh plate is a single plate of hand hammered steel, and follows all the curves of the muscles with a wrapping plate hinged on its outer edge They're cut assymetrically to allow better contact between the inside of the wearer's leg and the horse when mounted. Both plates incorporate an outward turn on their upper edges providing a stop from incoming weapons and adding significant strength to the entire assembly. The heart shaped knee fan protects the outside of the knee joint.

Complete with straps and historically correct bronze buckles. Arming tabs also included for hanging from your arming doublet or a waist belt.

Raised by hand in our workshop by Jeffrey Hedgecock from plates of 1050 spring steel with no welding, then heat treated for superior dent resistance, and finished with a high polish to resist rust.

Spring steel thickness-
.062" (1.5mm) cops, .042" (.75mm) thigh plates, lames and greaves or demi-greaves.
