Braies, 15th Century, Lengberg

Reproduction of the garment found at Lengberg Castle in East Tyrol, and published by the University of Innsbruck.

Underwear of this type may be seen in late 15th and early 16th C. German and Bohemian artwork, specifically the work of Albrect Durer.

A delighted bather splashes around in a pond wearing a pair of remarkably similar underwear in Sebastien Vrancx's  'Autumn' landscape'.  The painting is one of a pair painted around 1600 while Vrancx was living in Italy.  (The painting is probably from the collection of Cardinal Aldobrandini, Rome)

Garment is made of 2 layers of linen to minimize show-thru. Adjustable ties allow garment to fit a range of sizes. (Model has 40" hips and wears BSD medium size 14th C. braies and size 34 jeans)

Many thanks to David Vavreck for bringing the Vrancx painting to my attention.
