Nine Men's Morris

Nine Men’s Morris, known as Merrels in France and Mill in Germany is probably the best known of all medieval board games though it is part of a family that includes three, five and twelve Men’s Morris.

The two players start with all men off the board and alternately place them on the board attempting to make a row of three and preventing their opponent from doing so. If a player makes a row of three then they may remove one of their opponent’s men. Once all the men are on the board each player moves them, again to make a row of three to remove their opponent’s men.

The Morris games are games of strategy, played by people of all classes in medieval society.
