Fire Starter Kit with Flint & Steel

Fire is an essential element in any camp. This kit comes with everything you need to start a fire the medieval way!

The process of starting a fire with flint and steel is straightforward. A spark is created by striking the steel down across the sharp edge of a flint or quartz rock. The rock shears off tiny flakes of metal, creating sparks.

To nurture the spark into a flame, the spark is caught on a highly flammable material called char cloth ('charcoal cloth'). Once the char cloth is glowing, it is transferred to a bundle of tow and blown into flame. The flaming tow is used to ignite successively larger tinder like wood shavings, dry pine needles and small twigs (not provided).

An excellent video tutorial on starting a fire with flint and steel may be found here:

Each kit includes a steel, 2 flint rocks, char cloth, hemp tow and instructions, packed in a muslin bag. Strikers are hand forged in Germany of high carbon steel. Flints are shards of assorted shapes.

Due to the handcrafted nature of the product, striker shape may vary from photograph, but is of the correct medieval shape. Slight rust patina does not affect fire making. Shards and bag may vary in size/shape from those shown.
