Coat, Dagged, early 15th C. -MADE TO ORDER

Our stylish Dagged Coat is a literal reconstruction of a garment pictured in Bibliothéque de l'Arsenal, Paris, Ms. 5070, the Decameron, which was produced for Phillippe le Bon between 1430-1440.

Variations appear throughout this manuscript as well in several plates of the Hunting Book of Gaston Phoebus (BnF,  Fr 616, Fol. 40v.,  Fol. 53v, Fol. 66). Early versions of this gown are worn in Fiore del Libre (1410), The Grandes Chroniques de France (Richelieu Manuscrits Français 2813) and Bible Historiale (BnF MS. Fr09).

The coat has the simple semi-fitted body, mid length skirts, small standing collar and bag sleeves seen in the manuscript. Most interesting is the deep, elaborate dagging on the skirt, and fringe on the upper arm. This dagging is referred to as 'zaddeln' (sing. 'zaddel') in German, and is a civilian nod to military fashion, much as camoflage is used as a fashion fabric today.

The coat is worn over a doublet and hosen. (Our Early 15th C. Doublet and Split hose are the correct foundation garments for this coat). Made of wool, the body and sleeves are lined in our signature oatmeal linen, while the skirts are unlined. The front closes with handmade hooks and eyes. This unique, beautifully tailored garment will take a gentleman from town to the hunt in comfort and style.
