Hat, Acorn, 15th Century

Worn by St. Eligius in Petrus Christus’ “St. Eligius in his workshop”, and by subjects in works by Dierick Bouts (“Martyrdom of St. Erasmus”, “Justice of Emperor Otto III”) and many others. It is seen being worn by everyone from soldiers to courtiers, and could be the single most popular and universal style seen in 15th C. artwork. Courtiers are seen wearing this style of hat under their chaperones in King René’s “Book of the Tournament”.
