Coat, Pleated, 15th Century

Short jacket typical of mid late 15th C. fashion in England, Burgundy, France and the Low counties. May be seen on men in virtually any visual source from 1450-1490. Excellent examples may be seen in René of Anjou's "Book of the Tournament".

Pleats radiate from shoulder and run to the hem with the waist creating a fashionable, broad shouldered "X" shape. Closes with hidded hooks in the center front. Sized and intended to wear over a mahoitred doublet, which provides support for the sleeves. Completely lined- wool is lined with linen, fancy brocades or velvet lined with contrasting silk. Hand finished, no machine stitching visible on the outside or inside of garment.
