Buckle and Chape Set, Pewter, 14th-15th C., 3/4"

Pewter buckles were not as common in the period as were copper alloy ones, although those that were made often seem to have been imitating in style the rich silver or silver gilt examples, whereas copper alloy buckles were invariably of rather plain utilitarian form. Interestingly, the girdlers guild throughout the 14th century sought to ban the use of pewter on belts on the grounds of it being an inferior metal. The statute of 1391 however, recognised that pewter had been in use for some time and that its use could continue.

This buckle and end tip are reconstructed from pewter originals.
