La Femme dans la Société Médiévale
(Woman in medieval society)
A follow up to the now out of print ‘Daily life of the Medieval Woman’, ‘Woman in Medieval Society’ examines the medieval woman’s place in society.
The medieval woman is often portrayed and seen as a one dimensional character- a a voiceless maid, cook and bearer of children, subservient to her husband and bound by the dictates of the Church. They were regarded as multifaceted and even contradictory; as Eve, associated with weakness and original sin, and Mary, placed above all saints, the mother of God.
This book examines period sources to discover the womans true role and place in her world. Her life, society, her work, her relationship with her husband, the neighborhood she lived in and her role in the community are cosidered. Far from a presentation of the life of the elite women, this book explores the life of average women- single women, peasant women, the shop keepers, women who employed and were emloyed are all covered in this exceptional volume.
