Badge, Livery, Lancaster Red Rose

During the Wars of the Roses (15th century) the White Rose of York and the Red Rose of Lancaster were the emblems of the Royal houses of York and Lancaster. During this time the Red Rose was the symbol of Lancastrian partisans opposed to the rival House of York, whose symbol was the White Rose of York. The opposition of the two roses gave the wars their name: the Wars of the Roses. The red rose was first adopted as an heraldic device by the first Earl of Lancaster and became the emblem of Lancashire following the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.The conflict was ended by King Henry VII of England, who symbolically united the White and Red Roses to create the Tudor Rose, symbol of the Tudor dynasty.
