Points Kit, Arming points, Hemp

'Do it yourself' kit for making hemp arming points. Each package contains what you need to make 4 points!

Although multicoloured points appear in at least six paintings by Hans Memling, none are used with armour. The clearest depiction of multicoloured points is found in the The Trinity Altarpiece (Hugo van der Goes, 1478) where coloured points are clearly seen on St. George's couter. The points are green, creamy white and red, and appear to be a simple 3 strand plait.

Arming points are mentioned in 'How a man schall be armyd at his ese when he schal fighte on foote (Hastings MS. [f.122b])

...the armynge poyntis muste be made of fyne twyne suche as men make stryngis for crossbowes and they muste be trussid small and poyntid as poyntis. Also they muste be wexid with cordeweneris coode...

(The arming points must be made of fine twine like that with which men make strings for crossbows. These points must have tips for lacing. And they must be waxed with leather-workers's code)

Bowstrings were sometimes made of hemp string, therefore we have used hemp string for our kits.

'Cordeweneris coode' is traditionally a mix of pitch, resin, oil and/or beeswax. Personally, code is a bit sticky for our taste, so we're including beeswax to coat the points to strengthen and make them non-slip. We recommend using Gorilla Glue (not included) as a substitute for rabbit hide or hoof glue to affix the chapes to the braided points.

Each kit makes 4 points up to 25" long:

12 strings, cut to length
8 brass chapes
1 cube of beeswax
1 instruction sheet

PLEASE NOTE: Each package makes 4 solid coloured points. Order 3 packs in 3 different colours to make a dozen 3-colour points. Order 3 packs in the same colour to make a dozen solid coloured points.
